The Slashies
I learnt a new word this weekend. Wanna hear? Slashy.
What the ef is that, you ask?
A slashy is a person who has a slash (or two) in what they do.
I.e. blogger/student/writer/rockstar-in-life.
I’m not sure if anyone out there has identified that it’s actually the successor to the phrase multi-hyphenate, which was most popularly applied to the beloved many-interest, multi-talent phenom, J.Lo.
I, for one, am super happy to see multi-hyphenate get replaced. Using it in a sentence was just as bad as those new super cheap Microsoft commercials with Jerry Seinfeld and Bill ‘William’ Gates.
Other famous slashies, like so famous their faces are on t-shirts in every tourist shop from Tijuana to Taipei famous, include Al Gore (politician/green-god/reformed-personality-developer) and Angelina Jolie (actress/humanitarian/best-looking-baby-maker-on-the planet).
And there’s news today that there’s two more big names to add to the community.
Gossip peeps from the Daily News report that:
Christy Turlington is going back to college to study maternal and child health at Columbia University. “I have explored several career paths and have discovered that in addition to being a mother, a career in service is most fitting,” she told us. Perhaps she can study nights with Chelsea Clinton. The former First Daughter is also starting a master’s program at Columbia, majoring in public health policy, according to a source.
Model/yogi/social-service-provider and campaign-stumper/finance-chick/soon-to-be-her-mother. Both have got to be slashy originals.
So for all you bleeding-hearts/volunteers, actors/photographers/writers, servers/journalists, retail-experts/part-time-LSAT-practicers and all the other slashies out there, it seems you keep some good company.
I’m curious, what slashy are you?
