Forget I-bankers and 401ks (that’s the US version of RRSPs), the financial crisis is flooding high school students’ minds as they prepare for college/university. Tour guides are answering a lot more questions about fees, let alone tuition; guidance counselors are helping students prepare two lists of schools to apply for—one if the market recovers and one if it doesn’t. Students are considering in-state schools and even community colleges based on the price-factor alone. I hear the sound of crickets is popular over at the expensive schools, as administrators ask, ‘Lower what?’ – CSMonitor
10 plain, old-fashion good things to do at work (that will look especially impressive given how bad everything else around the job-front is) – CareerHub
Layoffs aside, if you can hold on to you job your salary will still be in tact. A US consulting firm did a study with big and not-as-big companies to see if they were going to trim budgets by trimming salaries. Not so, was the end result. If we don’t fire you, the companies agreed, we’re not going to punish you with ignoring inflation rates and keeping your salary as is. They added, since we know how much you want us too, we are going to skimp on the year-end bonuses because hey—if we’re not getting them, you’re sure as hell not – WSJ
Karma’s a bitch so don’t make ugly at your current job. Of course, you’ll leave for the job that’s more you and of course, you’ll try harder there but who knows if your manager or the HR person at the old, crappy job decide not to play by the law rules and tell your new employer what you were like once the honeymoon was over – Brazen Careerist
Is an upside to the shitstorm we’re in, a re-birth of the DIY trend? Do It Yourself has long been stuffed in the basement or behind the garage door, something a periphery person (family friend? Drunk uncle?) always wanted to share whenever they saw you. But with everyone about broke (or feeling that way), maybe DIY is the new consumerism? A new tv show may prove DIY spells mainstream after all – PSK
